Rhode Island QSO Party

OBJECT 
To provide an opportunity for Amateur Radio operators to contact and exchange QSO
information with as many Rhode Island Amateur Radio operators as possible during the
contest time period in accordance with the rules of operation as provided here. 

SPONSOR
The Rhode Island QSO Party is sponsored by the CTRI (Connecticut / Rhode Island) 
Contest Group to promote Amateur Radio activity within the State of Rhode Island and 
Providence Plantations. 

RULES OF OPERATION

1. All operations will be in accordance with current FCC rules and regulations. 

2. The use of spotting nets, by way of repeaters, packet nodes, simplex operation, 
telephone or by any other means, is prohibited in all categories of operation. 

3. Operation on all HF bands and modes is permitted, except on 30, 17 and 12 meters. 
Use of repeaters is allowed for 10 meter FM operation only. 

4. Stations may be worked once per band per mode. The digital modes include CW, RTTY, 
Packet and all other non-speech modes. The phone modes include AM, FM and SSB. 

5. The Rhode Island QSO Party will begin at 0000Z on the fourth Saturday of October and 
end at 2400Z on Sunday. 
All stations may work during the entire 48 hour period of this contest.

6. All logs must be submitted no later than 30 November of the year in which the 
contest takes place.
Separate logs may be submitted, if desired, for each mode. 
Dupe sheets are required for all stations
submitting logs with more than 100 contacts. Logs should be mailed to:

7. Any station not abiding by any of the rules will be disqualified. 
All disqualifications are at the 
discretion of the RI QSO Party Committee and all disqualifications are final. 

BONUS POINT STATIONS 
Bonus Point Stations are stations of members of the CTRI Contest 
Group located within the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. 
Working a Bonus Point
Station will earn the contestants 5 points for each phone contact and 10 points for 
each digital contact. 
The callsigns of the Bonus Point Stations are published below. Bonus Point Stations 
compete only
against other Bonus Point Stations in their respective categories. Designation of a 
Club Bonus Point 
Station must be approved by the Rhode Island QSO Party Committee. 

Bonus Point Stations for 1999 are KB1LN, KD1NW, WA1MKS, AA1KM, N1OLF, K1WI, WB1FDM, 
N1HRA and the CTRI Contest Group Club station WA1RR. 

ONE-TIME BONUS STATION 
Contact with the CTRI Contest Group club station, WA1RR, will 
count 10 points for a phone contact and 20 points for a digital mode contact. 
This Special Bonus will 
count only once, regardless of band, mode or category. 

EXCHANGE 
Rhode Island Stations - Send signal report and County (i.e.: 59(9)9 Washington County). 
Log DX
stations under "DX" as the state.

Non-Rhode Island Stations US Stations - Send signal report and State (i.e. 59(9) 
Texas) Canadian
Stations - Send signal report and Province (i.e. 59(9) Quebec) DX Stations - 
Send signal report and
Country (i.e. 59(9) Ireland) 

CATEGORIES FOR AWARDS

Single Operator QRP (less than 10 Watts entire period)
Single Operator Low Power (150 Watts or less entire period) 
Single Operator High Power (more than 150 Watts anytime) 
Multi-Operator QRP (less than 10 Watts entire period)
Multi-Operator Low Power (150 Watts or less entire period) 
Multi-Operator High Power (more than 150 Watts anytime) 

Awards will be issued to the highest scoring station in each category, 
including the highest scoring DX entry. 


SUGGESTED FREQUENCIES 
Approximately 30 kHz up from the bottom of the General, Novice / Technician Plus 
phone and CW bands. 
Adherence to ARRL suggested band plans for all modes of operation is encouraged.

Count one (1) point per phone QSO with any station
Count two (2) points per digital QSO with any station 
Count five (5) points per phone QSO with a RI Bonus Point Station
Count ten (10) points per digital QSO with a RI Bonus Point Station

MULTIPLIERS Rhode Island Stations

Your multiplier is the number of states, VE provinces / territories and one (1) DXCC 
country worked.
For the purposes of this QSO Party, the US, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii are not 
considered DX stations). 
Additional DXCC countries worked count only as contacts, not as additional multipliers.
A maximum of seventy (70) multipliers are allowed, as follows:

                                                51 States (Washington, D.C. is  
                                                          considered a multiplier 
                                                          separate from MD)
                                                13 Canadian Provinces
                                                1 DXCC country 
                                                total:  70 Multipliers 

(Maritime / Aeronautical Mobile contacts may be counted as a contact, but not as a 
multiplier. )

Non-Rhode Island Stations Your multiplier is the number of Rhode Island counties 
worked (5). 

FINAL SCORE Multiply the total QSO points times your multiplier to arrive at your 
final score.

ADMINISTRATION 
The CTRI Contest Group shall annually appoint a RI QSO Party Chairperson, and a 
representative club, whose responsibilities shall include the publication of the RI 
QSO Party announcement in Amateur Radio magazines, journals, internet web pages, 
and various RI club newsletters, as deemed appropriate. This published information 
shall include the contest rules, dates, hours of operation, suggested operating 
frequencies, a listing of the official Bonus Point Club stations, and any other issues 
of importance. 

The RI QSO Party Chairperson, with the help of the representative club, shall be 
responsible for the proper tabulation of contest logs. The RI QSO Party Chairperson 
will oversee the receipt of all logs and has the final authority to resolve issues 
relating to the rules of the contest and the tabulation of scores. 
The RI QSO Party Chairperson is also responsible for the issuance of all 
RI QSO Party awards.
