I have archived a bunch of data on an IBM RISC System/6000 running AIX to
a 1/4" tape.

I am trying to un-tar the data on a SPARC clone running SunOS. The
amount of data is about 80MB. When I try to un-tar the archive, after
extraction of about 10MB of the archive, the tape stops and I get the
following error:

tar: tape read error Unexpected EOF

I have used different tapes, but the error persists. I can read and
extract the archive on the RISC System 6000, but get the error on the
SPARC even when reading the archive.

The command I used to create the archive was:

  tar -cvf /dev/rmt1

The command I have used to try extracting the archive is:

  tar xvf /dev/rst8

Can anyone please suggest any ideas about what I can do to get around
this?

BTW, I have tried backup on AIX and restoring on SunOS but, of course,
they work differently. SunOS restore barfed saying the tape file hadn't
been created by dump, yet AIX dump doesn't work the way SunOS wants it to.
