  I knew this variable and I tried to read Japanese article with this
variable. However it was not sufficient to use and I had to write the
Japanese patch.

  1. NN counts Escape sequences as characters. the character count is
     broken.
  2. NN recognizes ONE Japanese 2 Byte character as 2 characters.
     Line wrapping makes some disasters caused by separation of ONE
     character.
  3. There are many coding systems in Japanese.
     I think some Japanese terminal emulator and editors come from
     major computer makers such as SUN, DEC, SONY,,, can't handle the
     Japanese codinging system with escape sequences.
