I first tried to post this article at various fj.* newsgroup but our
news server here at Netcom just bounces it back, saying
"fj-questions-unix@junet.ad.jp: host unknown". So I resorted to
posting this article here at sci.lang.japan and several others. Hope
it works....

Hi. My name is Dan Kogai. Just about a week ago I got an account
here at Netcom which offers Full-fledged Unix account for everyone for
a nominal fee. I found it great--except for the problem I'm writing.
I happened to be a bilingual of Japanese and English. And netcom
offers access to virtually all newsgroup across the world, including
fj.*, the newsgroup of Japan written primalily in Japanese, Which is
great. Yet many of netcom-based unix programs are not Japanese savvy,
which is not that surprising yet not so great, either. But I am not a
kind of person to give up so easily. Here is list of what I did.

1st step. I mailed myself a letter with a Japanese text. It
again worked fine (Though built-in pager of many mail frontend
programs screw up, you can save it to, say, mbox and read it with good
old cat/more/less).

2nd step. I 'cat'ted files @ /usr/spool/news/fj/*. It worked
with no problem, given that you have a Japanese-savvy terminal /
emulator (I am using Terminal 2.2J for Macintosh w/ KanjiTalk).

3rd step. I rn'd fj.* and got garbage that goes like "$G(B....".
So the netcom-based rn doesn't work or not patched for text correctly
paging text with escape sequence. Time for some hack....

4th step. I got a patch for rn and made my own rn. It worked
absolutely right (That's the one I'm using right now!).

5th step. I tried to post an article @ fj.test. Doh! It didn't
work! All escape sequences are stripped off. I first tried posting
via Pnews. It didn't work. I checked .article and .article appears
correct. So that's not the Pnews' problem. Then I slammed the
article to inews. Didn't work. So that must be the news daemon's
problem. When it reads the article, it strips off all escape sequence
which is used to quote Japanese 2-byte code so ordinary ascii chars
and the Japanese code can co-exist. Now there's not much I can do
since I am no root. Time to bring this subject up here.

Is there any solution? Since mailer works fine with JIS, I think I
can post an article by e-mailing an article....Any response is
welcome, Japanese or English (I am writing this article in English
only because romaji is such a pain in the eyes to read....). Thank
you in advance. Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu.

P.S. Answers in Japanese are very, very, welcome. I can read JIS
kanji already, thanks to the patched rn.
P.S. Hayaku Nihongo de fj.* ni kakikomitainaa....
