Version 1.1 of XJDIC is now being released to the world, almost
exactly 12 months after V1.0 went out.

(XJDIC is a Japanese/English-English/Japanese search_and_display
program which is based on the author's JDIC/JREADER programs
(MS-DOS). It runs on Unix systems in a Japanese-support
environment such as kterm or internationalized xterm.)

The updated xjdic.tar.Z is in pub/nihongo on
monu6.cc.monash.edu.au

A number of changes have been made in V1.1:

A. GENERAL

(a) a built-in romaji->kana function which obviates the need to
run a separate FEP such as kinput. This function can use either
Hepburn or kunrei romaji. In fact the mappings are in a file, so
a user can create her/his own moras.

(b) slightly speeded up binary searches.

(c) a control file (.xjdicrc) in which the various dictionary
and control files can be renamed.

B. MAIN (EDICT) DICTIONARY

(a) backspacing over and edit of fields being entered.

(b) a user-selectable set of "filters" which enable the display
of entries containing certain strings to be suppressed or
mandated. This enables, for example, the many person and place
names now in edict to be displayed or not displayed, at the
user's choice. The filters are specified in the .xjdicrc file.

(c) a "verb deinflection function". This operates when a search
key consisting of a kanji and several kana is entered (typically
cut from some text). If it conforms to common verb (or
adjective) inflection rules, the search is initially made on the
"dictionary form" of the word. Thus a search for "TOnde" will
result in an initial match on "TObu". This function can be
disabled by user command, or in the control file. The function
uses a control file which can be modified by the (foolhardy)
user.

(d) an alternative dictionary capability. XJDIC can now access
an alternative dictionary, specified on the command-line or in
the control file. The user can toggle between the main
dictionary and the alternative. (The author uses this facility
to access the Wnn pubdic.) The alternative dictionary also needs
to be indexed by XJDXGEN.

C. KANJI (KANJIDIC) DICTIONARY

(a) the display now includes the Kuten and Shift-JIS codes of
the kanji.

(b) when specifying a kanji by its JIS code, the Kuten and
Shift-JIS encodings can be used.

(c) the selection of a kanji by one of the index codes (Nelson
number, Bushu, Halpern number, etc.) has been generalized to
enable XJDIC to function even when new codes are added to
KANJIDIC.

(d) when a kanji is being selected by Bushu number (Bnn) or
"classical" radical number (Cnn), the user may limit the display
to kanji with a particular stroke count.

D. XJDXGEN

XJDXGEN, which generates the index file for the dictionaries,
has had some minor updates, the most important of which is to
relax the tokenizing rules a little to allow the funny KANJDIC
indices like "P1-2-3" and "SH7ke.3" to be handled.

AND FINALLY ...

I would like to thank the many people who have made supportive
noises about XJDIC over the last year, and the people who have sent
me useful suggestions and comments for its improvement (in
particular Hitoshi Doi and Paul Burchard, whose patches I have
incorporated).

A special mention for Scott Trent, Lars Huttar, Dan Crevier and
Pertti Kasanen who did the beta testing on V1.1, and along the
way improved it quite a bit.
