The X audio system, version .007

The X Audio System provides platform independent, device indpendent, network
transparent audio services. Or at least it will, when the implementation is
complete. (Implementation was stopped in August '96, after it was announced
that the Consortium was closing.)

The X Audio System is a great idea though, so the Consortium decided to make
the specifications and partial implementation available, in hopes that others
will finish it.

So, Here's you chance to win fame and glory. There's work to be done and
fortunes to be had.

The implementation was up to the point of being able to play sound
across the network, and mix audio streams. The platforms it was ported to,
(in order of completeness) were Digital, Sun, and SCO.
The SCO version, in the hw/oss directory should be portable to many similar
platforms.

This tree parallels the X11 source tree. (In fact, the code was worked on
from within the X11 source tree). However, you can build it just using the
installed X11 6.1, 6.2, or 6.3. (It only uses ICE, the Xrm routines, and
xmkmf.) To build it, just use xmkmf in this directory, and do a
"make Makefiles includes depend all install"

For a more detailed description of how things work, see the README_M1 file in
doc/hardcopy/Xaudio. (Things progressed a bit since that point)

Finally, I'd like to thank the people who worked on it...
    Peter Derr at Digital (pderr@zk3.dec.com)
    David Rivas at Sun (jdr@eng.sun.com)
    Shawn McMurdo at SCO (shawnm@sco.com)
    Jill Natakata at Sun (nakata@eng.sun.com)
Mark Welch here at the Consortium (mw@x.org)

Thanks,
    Ray Tice (ray@x.org)
