		X-Files -- The Ultimate File Organizer --

	current version 1.40b, dated 27 Oct 1997
**********************************************************************

X-Files is a graphical file management program for Unix/X-Window
environment that supports browsing and file operations for zip-, tar-,
compressed tar- and lharc-packages.

For more info, screenshots, on-line manual and, of course,
the package itself; see:

What you need to get X-Files working:
-------------------------------------

- Unix/X-Window environment. The development has been made on Linux and
thus Linux is the only platform that supports all the features. X-Files
has been tested also on Silicon Graphics Indy, HP 700 workstation and
   Digital Alpha workstation.

- X-Files is entirely written in Tcl/Tk and requires the versions
7.4/4.0 or higher. No extensions have been used so none are needed.
   No compiling, ready to run.

- X-Files supports a 3-button mouse which is therefor recommended. The
program works with 2-button mouses but without the 3-button emulation
you will not get everything out of the X-Files.

New features:
=========================================================================
27 Oct 1997 Version 1.40 beta

* If you choose to mail an error to us (keep them coming!), you can
include to the mail your explanation of what led to the error.
Please take a few minutes to write the info, it helps us a _lot_!!

* You can now _close_ (not destroy) all the windows neatly from
the system menu. This seems to have caused quite a lot of bug-mails...

* A new specifier '%c' which is replaced with the directory path of
the current side. Thanks for Matt Shibla for the idea!

* A new option 'Quiet' that prevents _any_ error messages from execution
of a command. The redundant 'Dialog' option is removed. (Dialog pops
up automagically if you have %o? specifiers)

* X-Files & wish4.0: if a filename started with tilde (~), it caused
an error 'no such user'. It works now in both normal and
  Virtual Filesystem.

* During the install we did not check the rights of 'tclIndex'-file,
which in some systems prevented the usage of our code in the
  library files.

* In certain situations ActionButtons acted as if the other mousebutton
(RMB/LMB) was pressed than what actually (LMB/RMB) was pressed.

* You can now double-click a path segment in the entry that shows
the current directory and this way change directly there.

* You can now check the external commands X-Files uses and their
  availability from the Help-menu.

* You can now choose whether to keep the message dialogs persistently
on top. (ie. they cannot be lost under _any_ window)

* Message dialogs are kept totally in the screen area.

* The 'Font Selection' -dialog now also shows the currently selected font.

* The troublesome Lucida-font has been removed from the install set.

* VFS: NEW!! A new VirtualLha for lharc-packages. Works the same as
       the other modes.

* VFS: CopyAs to Virtual Filesystems now works.

* VFS: You can now view the protection bits also in Virtual Filesystems.

* VFS: If the package you open for Virtual Filesystem is not writable,
X-Files now warns you only if you try to write to the file.

* Button Editor: 'Put Button' is changed to 'Copy Button'. A new command
'Copy Style' only copies the style of a button.

* Button Editor: You can now reload the latest saved set of ActionButtons
  with 'Reload Buttons'.

* Button Editor: You can now send a button to our ActionButton-gallery
with the 'Send Button'. AB-gallery can be found in
  http://java.inf.tu-dresden.de/X-Files/gallery.html
This is only available if you have Tcl version 7.5 or higher.
Check it out for cool ideas and cool buttons!

* Extension Editor: If you wrote the extension, then selected either
VirtualZip or VirtualTar, and _then_ selected the mousebutton; this
resulted in data corruption and if you saved it... It is now fixed!

* Extension Editor: If you created a new extension and a similar one
already existed, then tried to overwrite the old one; this resulted
in error. And if you then saved the extensions, the extensions-file
  was lost.

* Resource Editor: A new Select Color -dialog for color fields. Color
fields are thought to be those whose value starts with '#'.

* Resource Editor: You can now get the current geometry to the resources.
