PROGRAM SETUP
Print a copy of the file GETSTART.TXT for instructions for setting up the sound card signal levels.

NEW IN VERSION 1.8
1. The Receive dialog box now contains a combined spectral and fine tuning indicator. The spectral display is active at all times. The fine tuning indicator is a vertical (yellow dot) display on the right edge of the spectral display. It is only active during actual picture reception.
2. The receive data processing is always active when the dialog box is present and the "Receive" button is now labeled "Reset" since this is now its only function. The old "Standby" mode no longer exists.
3. While the Receive dialog box is present you now have access to other images on the screen and limited menu items. You can move, delete, or save images. Since you will be using "buffer" time during these actions you may decide to increase the buffering (Options Menu) to 20 seconds from the usual 10 seconds.
4. While the Receive dialog box is present, the tool bar is removed. This is to prevent attempts to do things like rotating the image while it is being received. The menu items are "smart" and will enable certain items only when you have selected an image which is complete.
5. When the Transmit dialog box is present but BEFORE transmission is started, you now have full access to image processing functions. The image that was selected before the dialog box was opened will be the one to be transmitted and clicking on "Mode Lock" will resize that image to accommodate the SSTV mode.
6. If you select "Mode Lock" with "Keep Aspect Ratio" you will now see any gray area that is created to "fill in" the image. You can now add text in these areas.
7. The Transmit dialog box now contains a "smart" volume control for setting sound card output. The program knows the volume setting in use for non-WinPix applications. These will always be restored when the Transmit dialog box is closed. When transmit starts, the output level will be set to that last used for this channel (right or left). You can then adjust the output as needed and the new settings will be remembered.
8. The PD modes have be modified to facilitate continuous Autotune.
9. The PD65 mode has been dropped and replaced by a higher resolution 320 x 240 mode called PD90. This mode provides better resolution than Scottie 1 or Martin 1 in less time.
10. A high speed 640 x 480 mode has been added to the PD family. While it does not have the resolution of the PD180 and PD240 modes, PD120 gets the job done in two minutes. For many pictures the resolution will be quite acceptable.
11. The HQ modes introduced by Martin Emmerson are included. While these are not "official" implementations, they have been tested extensivly for compatability with Robot and Superscan implementations.
12. The PD and HQ mode families have the capability of Continuous Autotuning. A check box is available in the Receive dialog box to control this function. When enabled for these mode families, the AudioRIT will likely change in small increments during image reception. As with any Autotune function, poor signal conditions can cause problems.
13. The PD and HQ mode families both use Y/C rather than RGB color transmission. Like the Robot modes this saves transmission time but mistuning results in color shifts.
14. The HQ modes can be received by averaging the color components on alternate lines. This reduces noise sensitivity by 3 dB at the expense of vertical resolution. A "radio button" labeled "Ave" turns this on and off. If "Ave" is enabled, and "Cont. Tune" is not, the HQ modes still show the proper colors in the presence of mistuning.
15. A "Turtle Icon" now appears in the Tool Bar and in the Receive and Transmit dialog boxes. When clicked, these "buttons" will call a second instance of WinPix Pro. If one is not loaded it will be loaded. These "buttons" allow you to switch easily between instances where you are using one for transmission preparation while receiving in another.
16. When you actually start to transmit, a Receive dialog box in another instance of the program will be automatically closed to free up the sound card.

NEW IN VERSION 1.7
1. Distictive Header design to distinguish from versions 1.5 adn 1.6
2. The text entry system now supports a library of 16 messages to allow for faster anotation.
3. The SSTV mode selection process has been modified to use drop down combo boxes. This is much faster!
4. A new SSTV mode filter has been added in addition to the "ALL, FAMILY, & MODE" during receive. The new addition is "PREFER". The Action menu allows you to select any of the 41 available modes as "preferred".
5. If the VIS code was missed the "Enable Sync Start" method of starting images now trys to match the time between sync pulses to the selection of modes provided by the mode filter. If not successful, the Default mode will be selected.
6. The option is now provided to skip the "Standby" mode of receive (green background) and go directly to "Armed" ( gray background).
7. The GVA high resolution modes are no longer present. They were not being used and the PD modes are better.
8. The short cut keys for Receive, Transmit, and Monitor are now simply R, X, and M. The ALT key is not needed.

IMPORTANT HINT
Remember that clicking on the Reset button in the Receive Dialog Box will reset a false start. If reception starts in the wrong mode or on noise simply click on the Reset button to reset the process.

SUGGESTION FOR THUMBNAIL IMAGE MANAGEMENT
Because you are operating under Windows, your image management can best be done by a robust program designed for that purpose. We recommend MediaCenter from JASC ( Producers of Paint Shop Pro). Setting the "Smiling Face" tool bar icon to call that program allows you to choose from libraries of thumbnails.

SOUND CARD DRIVERS
An old sound card driver can cause occasional picture breakup. This is particularly true if you are running Windows 95 and are using an old Windows 3.1 driver. Check with your sound card manufacturer to obtain the latest driver software. If you are "on line" these can usually be downloaded.

DEFAULT IMAGE DIRECTORY
When you first run the program you should establish a default directory for the storage of images. Load any image using the File menu "Open" command and then use the File menu "Save As" command. Within the dialog box, you can select the directory and the image format ( file extension ). After the image is saved, the settings you used will also be recorded and will become the new default location and format for images saved by the "Save" command or the autosave function.

ENHANCED TEXT ENTRY
Since the manual was printed, the text entry has been expanded to include both SHADOW and EXTRUSION of the text. The later gives a 3D effect. The shadow or the extrusion can now be either up or down and to the right.

SOUND CARD IRQ CONFLICTS
For WinPix Pro to function properly it is essential that your sound card is operating properly under Windows. The default IRQ setting for most sound cards is IRQ 5. This is also the default used by the Pasokon card. If this card or any other has a conflict with the sound card IRQ change the IRQ jumper on the sound card and reinstall the sound card software using the new IRQ. If the sound card can record and playback ".WAV" files created using a Windows recorder program supplied with the card, it should be ready to work with WinPix Pro. WinPix Pro does NOT use ".WAV" files but it does use the same commands to Windows to control the sound card.

VBX CONFLICTS
VBX files are used by a number of commercial programs to add capabilities and enhance the appearance of Windows programs. These file are loaded into your WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory where any program can access them.
When Winpix Pro installs it checks the date (version) of these files before overwriting them to insure that it does not replace a newer file with an older one. We have encountered install programs that do not check dates and as a result it is always possible that a Windows program you install after WinPix Pro could replace one of these files with a version which is incompatable with WinPix Pro.
The usual symptom of such a problem is an error message at the time you bring down a dialog box in WinPix Pro. To verify the problem you can check the dates on the VBX files on the WinPix Pro disk against those in your WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory. If ANY of the three VBX files used by WinPix Pro in the WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory are older, just reinstall WinPix Pro.
Three VBX files are used by WinPix Pro. They are: THREED.VBX, SPIN.VBX, and MHSL200.VBX.

256 COLOR VIDEO
Since many of you have not been concerned with having High Color or True Color in Windows, make sure that you are not still running in 256 colors. Use the About box in the Help menu. It will tell you the video card's settings under Windows. Yes! It has happened to more than one of you and the pictures can be rather ugly in the 256 color mode.

SCOTTIE DX
If you transmit Scottie DX and the receiving station says his system triggered the AVT 188 mode it is not the fault of WinPix Pro. A VIS conflict exists and some systems must still force the selection of Scottie DX rather than rely on some automatic means of resolving the VIS conflict. Read the discussion in the manual for an explanation of the VIS conflict between the Scottie DX and AVT 188 modes.
